Here’s why it matters:

Even though deodorant is a small product, it creates a lot of waste.

Think about it.

Most people use deodorant, so the waste it creates adds up quickly.

But wait, can’t you just recycle it?

Well, yes and no.

Technically, deodorant is usually packaged in materials that can be recycled, however, many deodorant sticks are a combination of multiple plastics, which makes it difficult to separate at the recycling facility.

Also, the production of plastic uses up fossil fuels and forms greenhouse gases. It is a good thing to avoid.

The plastics typically used include high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, and polypropylene. Many times, people accidentally throw these plastics away into their trash bin, which sends it to landfill.

Oh no!

Get this:

These materials take around 1,000 years to fully degrade in the landfill! They also release a bunch of methane, a greenhouse gas, while doing so.

Oh, and then think about all of the fossil fuels used to create all that plastic. No thank you!

Many big brand deodorants also have a whole slew of harmful ingredients embedded into them.

All of the products I am going to talk about today are free of these harmful chemicals and are all-natural, however, here are the things you should watch out for:

Decoding the Ingredients of Deodorant

First, it is important to realize how deodorant has a direct connection to our lymphatic system since it is applied so close to our lymph nodes in our underarms. This system is essential to our immune system.

The things we put on our skin can be absorbed and negatively affect this system. The first thing to avoid is aluminum. It is added to deodorant because it works to block our bodies from sweating, which is also known as an antiperspirant.

 

 

Here’s the deal:

Since our bodies can absorb this aluminum through our skin, it can be bad for us. For example, it has the capability of causing changes to estrogen receptors. There also has been proven links to other health issues that affect the liver, kidney, and brain.

Parabens are used to prevent bacterial growth in the underarms. These cells can mimic the way that estrogen acts. In a study where researchers looked at breast tissues, parabens were oftentimes found, which may be linked to increased risk of breast cancer.

Propylene Glycol is added to deodorant because is seals in moisture. This chemical can easily become contaminated through it’s manufacturing process, which forms a neurotoxin. Absorption of this chemical can lead to dermatitis, liver, and kidney damage.

Trisclosan is found in a lot of hygiene products, such as deodorant and toothpaste because it is a synthetic antimicrobial agent. Its anti-fungal and antiviral. It is a known endocrine disrupter and possibly carcinogenic. It can be found in human breast milk and urine samples.

It’s good to stay away from it!

The last set of ingredients to avoid are phthalates, which contribute to the fragrance of a product. They are endocrine disrupters that are probable carcinogens. They also are development toxicant, which means they can interfere with child development and reproductive toxicants, which mean they can harm the reproductive system.

Instead of the plastic that most of us are used to, this stick comes in a cardboard tube. This is more sustainable because cardboard is much more renewable and easier to recycle.

I absolutely love this cruelty-free, plastic-free deodorant. Again, I am a sucker for packaging. Not only is this stick encased in a 100% recyclable or compostable cardboard tube, but it also has super cute cat illustrations on the exterior.

The name of the company that makes this product is EcoRoots zero waste store. They are a small-batch skincare company that creates vegan products with pure, all-natural, and organic ingredients.

DIY Unscented Deodorant

 

 

If you love a DIY project, you are going to love this plastic-free, unscented deodorant recipe. This is always a go-to for me if I run out of my deodorant and am in a pinch. I also love it for the months that I am trying to save some money.

Chances are, you may already have all of these ingredients in your household already.

All you need is:

• ¼ cup of baking soda

• ¼ cup of cornstarch,

• 2 tablespoons of coconut oil

• 5-10 drops of essential oils (optional)

 

 

First, stick the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it if it is solid. Find a jar or container to store your deodorant in and add the coconut oil. Add in the baking soda and cornstarch and mix well.

If you want your deodorant to be unscented, then you are done.

However, if you want to add a little bit of a fragrance, add 5-10 drops of your favorite oil.

Feel free to mix some scents, as well! Get creative with it.

To apply, you can either use your fingers to scoop a little product out of the jar or you can use a spoon to get it out. It may be a little different than your typical roll-on deodorant, but I promise, this will work great.
